How to Calculate How Long Your Move Will Take: A Complete Guide for Customers

Posted on March 31, 2026 By Vincent Atechong | CEO, Prince Asong Moving Company

One of the most common questions we receive from our customers is a simple one: "How long is my move going to take?" It seems straightforward, but the honest answer is that no two moves are exactly alike. The duration of a move depends on a wide range of factors — many of which are entirely within your control as the customer.

As CEO of Prince Asong Moving Company, I have overseen thousands of moves of every size and complexity. In this guide, I want to walk you through every factor that affects how long your move will take, so you can plan accurately, reduce stress, and help your moving crew do their best work efficiently.

Why Does Move Duration Matter?

Knowing how long your move will take helps you:

  • Plan your day
  • Manage elevator or parking reservations
  • Arrange childcare or pet care
  • Schedule utility connections at your new home
  • Avoid costly overtime charges

Time is money — for both of us.

1. The Size of Your Home

The single biggest predictor of move duration is the size of your current home. More rooms mean more furniture, more boxes, more trips, and more time. Here is a general baseline our crews use as a starting point:

  • Studio / 1-Bedroom: 1–2 movers, 2–4 hours
  • 2-Bedroom: 2–3 movers, 3–6 hours (Half to full day)
  • 3-Bedroom: 3–4 movers, 5–8 hours (Full day)
  • 4-Bedroom: 4–5 movers, 7–10 hours (Full day+)
  • 5+ Bedroom / Estate: 5+ movers, 1–2 days (Multi-day plan needed)

Note: These are estimates only. A heavily furnished two-bedroom can take longer than a sparsely furnished three-bedroom. Use these numbers as a starting point, not a guarantee.

2. The Volume and Weight of Your Belongings

It is not just the number of rooms that matters — it is what is inside them. Consider:

  • Homes full of heavy antiques, large sectional sofas, pianos, safes, or extensive book collections will take significantly longer to load and unload.
  • A minimalist home or recently decluttered space with fewer items will move faster.
  • Specialty items such as pool tables, grandfather clocks, large sculptures, or gym equipment require extra time, special equipment, and additional hands.

Pro Tip from Vincent: Go through every room before your move and donate, sell, or discard anything you no longer need. Every item you eliminate is time and money saved on moving day. The best move is the one with fewer boxes.

3. How Well You Are Packed and Prepared

This is one of the most controllable factors — and one that customers often underestimate.

If fully packed before the crew arrives:

  • Loading begins immediately
  • Items are protected and easier to handle
  • Move can proceed on schedule

If not fully packed:

  • Crew must wait, which costs time
  • Unpacked items are at greater risk of damage
  • Move time can increase by hours

Recommendation: Have every box sealed, labeled, and stacked in a central location (living room or hallway) the night before your move. The less the crew has to figure out, the faster your move will go.

4. Distance Between Your Old and New Home

Driving distance is a major variable, including:

  • Local traffic conditions and time of day
  • Number of trips required
  • Highway vs. city street routing
  • Seasonal weather and road conditions

For long-distance moves, travel time can range from several hours to multiple days. Factor in rest stops, fuel, and overnight lodging if needed.

5. Access and Logistics at Both Locations

The physical layout of your homes matters.

At the origin:

  • Driveway access
  • Number of stairs
  • Elevator availability and size
  • Hallway and doorway widths
  • Street parking

At the destination:

  • Same factors as above
  • Building restrictions, elevator reservations
  • Loading dock hours
  • Gate, clearance, or road restrictions

Tip: Stairs can add 15–30 minutes per flight; long carries from truck to door add significant time. Notify your moving company in advance.

6. Crew Size and Experience

Crew size and experience affect efficiency:

  • 2-person crew: good for small moves
  • 3–4-person crew: efficient for medium to large moves
  • 5+ movers: best for very large or complex moves

Booking an appropriate crew upfront is usually more cost-effective than risking overtime with a smaller crew.

7. Disassembly and Reassembly of Furniture

Large furniture pieces may need disassembly:

  • Basic pieces: 15–30 minutes each
  • Complex pieces: 30–60 minutes or more
  • Children’s furniture requires careful assembly

Pre-disassembling furniture saves time. Keep hardware in labeled bags.

8. Appliances and Special Items

Some items need extra attention:

  • Refrigerators, washing machines: disconnected and moved carefully
  • Pianos: require specialized equipment, 1–2 hours extra
  • Safes, heavy storage units, hot tubs, outdoor kitchens, artwork, and antiques: extra time and planning

Always disclose special items early to avoid delays or additional charges.

9. Packing Services

Professional packing adds time:

  • Small home: 2–4 hours
  • Medium home: 4–8 hours
  • Large home: full day or more

Customers can pack themselves to save money, but ensure it is done before moving day.

10. Time of Day, Season, and External Conditions

  • Time of Day: Early morning starts are fastest; rush hour adds delays
  • Season: Summer is peak season; winter may involve snow or ice
  • Weather: Rain, snow, or heat slows the crew
  • Building Restrictions: Check HOA or apartment rules

Putting It All Together: A Simple Formula

Estimate your move time with these factors: Factor Add to Estimate Base load/unload (by home size) 2–10 hours Each flight of stairs (loading) +20–30 min Each flight of stairs (unloading) +20–30 min Long carry (50+ ft) +30–60 min Driving time (local) +15 min – 2 hrs Furniture disassembly/reassembly +30 min – 3 hrs Piano or specialty item +1–2 hrs Packing by crew +2–8 hrs Rush hour or heavy traffic +30 min – 2 hrs Customer not fully packed +1–4 hrs

Always build in a buffer of 1–2 hours for unexpected delays.

Your Pre-Move Preparation Checklist

  • Boxes packed, sealed, and labeled at least the night before
  • Hardware and screws in labeled zip-lock bags
  • Appliances disconnected
  • Special or heavy items disclosed
  • Elevator/parking reservations confirmed
  • Building rules reviewed
  • Clear path from each room to the front door
  • Children, pets, and fragile items arranged separately
  • 2-hour buffer beyond estimate planned
